COVID-19 Pandemic Results in Billions of $$ in Infrastructure Projects Being Delayed or Canceled

COVID-19 Is Delaying Infrastructure Projects

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will be felt for years to come. According to a report released by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), more than $9.6 billion of infrastructure construction projects have been delayed or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A copy of the report can be found here.

Sixteen states, including Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, announced project delays or cancellations totaling about $5 billion. The report suggests there are lagging impacts from the pandemic starting to emerge in construction due to contractors increasingly worrying about the sagging economy.

These fears and decline in future scheduled projects are the main reason for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials to ask Congress for an infusion of $37 billion to offset losses at state departments of transportation-related to the pandemic. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released a map on July 29 to sway Congress to pass a pandemic infrastructure relief package. The map highlights 50 projects ready to be built but still need funding.
